Prevention Africa

Waiting in a health centreTheme: Prevention Africa

The objectives of this group of projects are to identify at least one safe and effective alternative to sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) for intermittent preventative treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) in Africa; to determine whether IPTp can be restricted to the main malaria transmission season in areas with highly seasonal transmission; and to determine the optimal use of IPTp where protection is also provided by insecticide treated nets (ITNs).

The major activities included in this group are:

A randomised, multi-centre,  controlled trial of a standard SP - IPTp regimen (Three doses of SP in second and third trimester) and screening and treatment of malaria at scheduled antenatal clinic visits in the second and third trimester in pregnant women who sleep under an insecticide treated bed net undertaken in four West African countries. To be completed by December 2013.

A multi-centre trial to determine whether using ITNs reduces the need or frequency of IPTp in HIV-positive and negative pregnant women, to be completed by summer 2010.
